On March 31st the Des Moines community lost a bright light and an incredible community leader: Teree Caldwell-Johnson. Teree was many things to the many people whose lives she impacted. She was the President and CEO of Oakridge Neighborhood Services, a member of the Des Moines School Board, and so much more. She was a kind and respected leader. Leaders like Teree Caldwell-Johnson are rare. I did not have a close relationship with her, but on many occasions I was the recipient of her kindness. I dedicate this poem to her memory and her radiance.
Unmatchable Radiance
How you walked the line between heaven and earth
And finally found your footing.
Beautiful one
Strong one
Learned one
The air is still with your passing.
The rain is even quieter.
You left us just enough light so that we could see what you saw:
Big vision full of color
Futures pregnant with promise
Goodness in the soil that we all walk on
Abundance for the ones who need it most.
You made things better.
Now you stand in your radiance as you always have.
Unmatchable.
Beautiful one
Strong one
Learned one
God's child and favorite daughter.
Home is but a short distance now.
May you land softly.

Oh my gosh. I was at the Ames Tribune when Teree was hired as an assistant city manager for the City of Ames -- the first woman to hold that post. I wrote about her hiring. What a talent. I followed her career a bit over the years; it's a shock to hear of her passing. Thank you for commemorating her, Teresa.
Beautiful, Teresa. Thank you. Ms. Caldwell-Johnsons's legacy will shine in our city for generations to come.
